Hawks sweep Lucan, will play Mount Brydges in second round

EXETER – The Exeter Hawks completed a four-game sweep of the Lucan Irish on Feb. 15 and 16 with victories of 9-2 and 3-1.

Heading into the second round of the PJHL Yeck Division playoffs, the Hawks will play the Mount Brydges Bulldogs, who eliminated the Aylmer Spitfires in five games in their first-round matchup. Mount Brydges finished just one point behind the Hawks in regular season play and won the season series over the Hawks five games to one. The series kicks off this Friday in Exeter at the South Huron Rec Centre at 8 p.m.

Game two is Saturday in Mount Brydges at 8:30 p.m., while game three is back in Exeter Sunday night at 8 p.m. Mount Brydges will host game four on Tues., March 3 at 8:30 p.m.

The Hawks wrapped up their series against Lucan on Feb. 15 with a 3-1 victory at the Lucan Community Memorial Centre. Lucan’s Blake Boreham got the Irish on the board first at 7:21 of the opening period.

But that was the only puck the Irish would put in the Hawks’ net, as Exeter replied with three unanswered goals. Exeter’s Brady Elder scored at 14:57 of the first period, sending the teams into the first intermission tied with a goal apiece.

There was no scoring in the second period, but Exeter’s Jarrett Baker gave the Hawks the 2-1 lead at 4:04 of the third, while Nick Sammons cemented the 3-1 win at 9:36.

The Hawks dominated 42-22 on the shot clock, while both teams were scoreless in their four power plays. Goalie Ryan Murray picked up the win for the Hawks.

Earlier in the weekend, the Hawks took game three at the South Huron Rec Centre in Exeter in a lopsided 9-2 win over the Irish.

Jarrett Baker opened the scoring for the Hawks at 5:27 of the first period, and Exeter never looked back. Elder gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead at 7:16.

The Hawks added three goals in the second period from Joel Denotter, Jack Robinson and Jon Baker, while Lucan’s only tally came from Jack Cronk.

The scoring continued in the third period as Exeter added goals from Nick Sammons (two), Sam Dupuis and Jarrett Baker. David Gysbers scored for the Irish.

Exeter was one for one on the power play, while the Irish came up empty on four power plays. The Hawks outshot the Irish 41-24. Exeter goalie Devyn Clark made 22 saves for the win while Preston Swan-Merrison and Gordie O’Dwyer shared goaltending duties for the Irish.

In other Yeck Division playoff news, the Dorchester Dolphins swept the North Middlesex Stars, while the Thamesford Trojans swept the Port Stanley Sailors. Dorchester and Thamesford will play each other in round two.
