Arson investigation at rural Port Elgin property

Two suspicious fires in two weeks sparked an arson investigation by Saugeen Shores police and fire officials, who are asking for the public’s help.

At 1:38 a.m. Wednesday a passerby called 911 to report a structure fire in a rural property in a triangle at Highway 21, Carlisle Street and Bruce County Road 3, the Saugeen Shores Police Service said in a news release.

A large outbuilding on the property was destroyed.

Saugeen Shores Police Sgt. Andy Evans could not say why Criminal Investigations and Drugs investigators deemed the circumstances of the fire suspicious.

“The property is sort of under transition – there is a house there, but it’s vacant. There were no injuries, just loss of property at this time,” Evans said.

Evans said investigators are trying to draw links between the latest fire and another one in a trailer parked on the same property March 24. It was also deemed suspicious .

Saugeen Shores Police ask anyone with information about the fires to call them at 519-832-9200, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
