10th Optimist Junior Golf Tournament to hit the greens August

EXETER – Though the COVID-19 pandemic has put an end to many summer activities and events, the South Huron Optimist Club’s 10th annual Junior Golf Tournament is continuing as planned – albeit with some changes.

The tournament, which will take place at the Ironwood Golf Club in Exeter on Aug. 24, will serve as an opportunity for young golfers between the ages of 10-18 from South Huron and beyond to put their skills to the test.

South Huron Optimist president Rachel Skillen said things will look a little different at this year’s tournament due to the pandemic. Masks will be mandatory when entering the clubhouse, tee times will be assigned instead of a shotgun start like previous years and any other COVID-19 measure being used at the golf club is required to be followed.

Skillen said competitors can also qualify for the Midwestern Ontario District Tournament, though the 2020 tournament has been cancelled so they will instead qualify to compete in the 2021 tournament alongside next year’s qualifiers.

The registration deadline for the tournament is Aug. 19, and information about tee times which will start at 2 p.m. will be sent out through email on Aug. 21. Though registration has only been open since July 9, Skillen said there have already been several entrants, and she expects there to be plenty of competitors by the time the tournament begins.
